God is My Power Source!
My name is Salena J. Morton. I am a retired teacher who was on a retirement journey and living my best life. I have always been an energetic person- like the Ever-Ready-Bunny! But, in October of 2025, I started feeling unusually tired. I went to my regular physician and had my yearly physical. Everything checked out good. Despite the good news, I felt something was amiss. Next, I had my yearly breast exam in mid-November. I didn’t get my usual letter stating that everything had checked out fine after a week.
So, I called the breast center. Someone called me back and told me that my imaging showed a mass in my right breast that needed further examination. A biopsy was scheduled for December. On Christmas eve, I received a call informing me that I had Level 2, Her2 Positive Breast Cancer.
I quickly met with a surgeon, who explained this cancer and what I would have to do to overcome it. A detailed plan was devised. Next, I met with my oncologist. She told me that this was a highly curable cancer, but it involved completing 6-8 rounds of Chemo, Her2 infusions, a lumpectomy, five weeks of radiation, and an additional year of Her2 infusions.
I ended up completing 8 rounds of chemotherapy and Her2 infusions. After these treatments, the mass was completely undetectable and tests showed no cancer. At that point, I had a lumpectomy. They removed 7 lymph nodes from under my arm near the site to test to make sure no cancer remained. Only one lymph node tested positive for cancer; and it was a totally different cancer than the one I had been treated for.
I was completely shocked and so were my doctors. So, they came up with a new treatment plan. I would complete my 5 weeks of radiation, take one year of Her2 infusions, and take a pill, that was very effective at treating the newly discovered cancer, for five years.
Although this journey has had many twists and turns, God has always been with me. He has been my constant companion through it all. He knew what was coming, and he was already providing the knowledge and know how to get me through cancer free. God used these physicians to save my life. He knew what I needed.
He has taught me that He is the vine and we are the branches and that if I abide in Him, he will provide everything that I need. He is my power source. He provides everything that I need- healing, comfort, and a listening ear. He has given me peace in the midst of this storm. Because of this breast cancer situation, I am a better Christian. He is my friend and I know He is a healer!
